A Tylium Refinery is nearly the most valuable civilian ship the Fleet could have next to a mining ship which is the pre-requisite for the refinery to operate. Once supplied with Tylium, a refinery ship can produce enough fuel to keep a large fleet operating continuously with frequent small craft patrols, steady power to the larger vessels, and even provide for rather frequent FTL jumps.
A Tylium refinery breaks down and processes the ore into "precursor", a fine and very volatile substance. This is then refined into liquid Tylium which is either stored aboard or transferred to other vessels in the Fleet. Due to the nature of the Tylium, the refinery ships give off a steady radioactive emission.
